5. PODCASTS AVAILABLE ON DRUG INFORMATION
The Food & Drug Administration recently announced the availability of podcasts to alert consumers and health care professionals about emerging drug safety issues. The podcasts are part of the agency's effort to broaden and speed communications concerning the safety of marketed medications when unexpected adverse events are reported to the FDA. The podcasts, which are broadcasts that can be transmitted to personal computers and personal audio players, will supplement the FDA's traditional print- and Web-based public health advisories. "The service contributes to this goal by providing a new venue for busy health care professionals and patients to find drug safety information, so that they don't have to look for it on FDA's Web site or read about it in print," FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach said in a statement.
