3. LCME ADOPTS NEW ACCREDITATION STANDARDS FOR MEDICAL

SCHOOLS

At its meeting last month, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) formally adopted three new accreditation standards, after obtaining feedback from the LCME's sponsoring organizations and discussion at a public hearing.

The standards address opportunities for medical students to participate in service learning activities, maintenance of a learning environment that promotes the development of professional attributes, and learning about basic principles of clinical and translational research. In response to comment at the public hearing, the LCME will be revising the draft language of the explanatory annotation which accompanies the new standard on clinical and translational research. All new standards will take effect on July 1, 2008.
