Title: A Practical Guide to Communication Skills in Clinical Practice (Part 1: Dealing with Feelings, Breaking Bad News) Very Good

Author(s): Dr. Robert Buckman; Dr. Walter Baile; Dr. Barbara Korsch

This is the first part of a comprehensive guide to communication skills presented as a set four of well designed, and easy to navigate CD ROMs (also available as five videotapes). These programs set out the basic principles of good communication. The programs than shift focus and illustrate more advanced techniques involved in dealing with patients' emotions (including anger, despair, denial and depression) and in unearthing hidden agendas or worries that the patient may have (such as anorexia or physical abuse by the spouse). Reviewers note, "this package uses good content but the examples in the scenarios are not always closely related to palliative care".

The CD includes several interviews of patients including, anger (after barium enema and pain), depression (middle aged woman is otherwise healthy), denial (post MI), assessing support (related to possible abortion) and unresolved grief (death of father).
