Title: Pediatric Palliative Care: A Standardized Patient Encounter
Author(s): Kristin Pirkola; Janet Fleetwood, Ph.D.
This submission is both a standardized patient case involving talking to a parent of a terminally ill child about palliative care and an excellent template for creating other standardized patient cases. The case example provided includes detailed instructions for the examinee, extremely well developed case materials for the standardized patient and explicit content and skills checklists for evaluation. A debriefing guide for use with students is also included which presents an overview of palliative care for children, insurance concerns, pain and symptom management, home care and sibling issues. Reviewers commented, "This is an extremely complete submission and an excellent addition to EPERC".
The authors have also included a template for use in developing additional SP cases. The template is not merely a listing of categories to be filled in, but each section includes directions to the case author. For example, "Characteristics that the SP Should Have" includes a checklist such as age, ethnicity, body habits, etc. The next section, "Physical Findings the SP Should Not Have", further explains, "Some of our SPs have real preexisting conditions. Would any preexisting conditions negatively affect your cases (e.g., elevated BP, surgical scars, etc.). Reviewers write, "an excellent template for both the novice and experienced SP case writer."
