Title: AAHPM UNIPAC 3: Assessment and Treatment of Pain in the Terminally Ill; 2nd Edition
Author(s): Porter Storey, MD; Carol Knight, EdM
This module is part three of a multi-section program prepared by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine for physician education. Each monograph is designed to be a self-study module and includes objectives, pre and post tests, reading materials, clinical scenarios to allow application of knowledge, references and the opportunity to earn CME credit. UNIPAC 3 focuses on three basic principles of pain control and presents information designed to help physicians assess and manage pain in terminally ill patients. Common clinical situations are used to illustrate the application of specific pain control principles. Upon completion of this UNIPAC,authors report that the learner will be able to 1. assess for the presence of cancer-related and noncancer-related pain 2. identify social, emotional, and spiritual pain 3. differentiate bone, neuropathic, and visceral pain 4. prescribe appropriate adjuvant drugs to treat bone, neuropathic and visceral pain, and pain due to raised intracranial pressure 5. calculate a continuous subcutaneous-infusion dose of morphine and hydromorphone 6. calculate an appropriate starting dose of morphine therapy for an opioid-naive patient 7. prescribe an appropriate alternative route of drug administration 8. prescribe appropriate treatments for nausea and constipation associated with opioid use. The module does not include a teaching plan or speaker notes. The videotape may be most effectively used as a trigger tape to stimulate small group discussions.
