Title: AAHPM UNIPAC 4: Management of Selected Nonpain Symptoms in the Terminally Ill; 2nd Edition

Author(s): Porter Storey, MD, FACP; Carol Knight, EdM

This module is Part 4 of a multi-series program prepared by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care. Each monograph is designed to be a self-study module and includes objectives, pre and post tests, reading materials, clinical scenarios to allow application of knowledge, references and the opportunity to earn CME credit. This UNIPAC describes nine non-pain symptoms commonly experienced by terminally ill patients, and presents specific, practical information designed to help physicians access and manage each symptom. Clinical situations likely to be encountered on an almost daily basis are included to illustrate the application of specific management techniques. The nine symptoms are combined into four symptom groups: anorexia and dysphagia; dyspnea; nausea, vomiting and bowel obstruction; and terminal restlessness and delirium. Upon completion of this UNIPAC author's report the learner will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

1. Assess for anorexia and dysphagia and provide effective interventions

2. Assess for dyspnea and prescribe effective treatments.

3. Assess for nausea and vomiting and prescribe effective treatments.

4. Assess for bowel obstruction and prescribe the least invasive treatments.

5. Assess for delirium and terminal restlessness and prescribe effective interventions.

Reviewer's comments include, "this is part of a classic series of self-study modules" and "this is an outstanding self-instructional module". Reviewers also commented on the pre/post evaluation that allows the learner an opportunity to measure progress.
