Medical Education Palliative Care Education Project

David E. Weissman, MD, Project Director--Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Medical College of Wisconsin Palliative Care Center. He is Board Certified in Medical Oncology, Hospice and Palliative Medicine. In 1995 Dr. Weissman was awarded a Faculty Scholar Award in Death Education from the Project on Death in America. From 1997-2004 Dr. Weissman directed the National Residency End of Life Education Project, helping 390 residency programs develop a palliative care curriculum. In 2003, e MCW Palliative Care Program was designated as one of six Palliative Care Leadership Center’s by the Center to Advance Palliative Care. Dr. Weissman is co-director of EPERC, End-of-Life Palliative Education Resource Center.

Judi Rehm, Project Manager--Ms. Rehm is an Education Project Manager in the Department of Educational Services for the Medical College of Wisconsin (this office coordinates MCW undergraduate medical education activities). Ms. Rehm has served as the project director for EPERC since inception in 1999 (End-of-Life/Palliative Education Resource Center). She is also director for online learning for MCW’s palliative care educational programs. Ms. Rehm has worked on multiple facets of medical education projects at both the medical school and residency level with particular emphasis on curriculum development, on-line learning, and other computer applications in medical education.

Deborah E. Simpson, PhD, Educational Specialist--Associate Dean for Education Support and Evaluation at MCW. Dr. Simpson has worked with Dr. Weissman as co-director of EPERC and other palliative care education initiatives. Dr. Simpson is well known nationally through her work with numerous national education organizations. Her special areas of emphasis are faculty development, instructional design, and outcomes measurement. Dr. Simpson will serve as consultant to assist in medical school recruitment, data management, and evaluation.

Susan Block, MD is an Associate Professor Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Director of the Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care program for the Dana Farber Cancer Center, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Block is internationally recognized for her work in medical education, psycho oncology, palliative medicine and faculty development. Dr. Block was director of the Project on Death in American Faculty Scholars Program and was a consultant for the National Residency End-of-Life Education Project.

Dr. Block will serve as a medical school mentor for two of the six schools in this project. She will coordinate the faculty development aspects of this project and participate in program oversight and evaluation.

Timothy Quill, MD is Professor of Medicine, Psychiatry & Medical Humanities at the University of Rochester and Director of the Center of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics. Dr. Quill is internationally recognized for his work in doctor-patient communication, medical education, medical ethics, and palliative medicine. He has designed and implemented numerous curriculum projects at U. Rochester that have improved medical education for medical students, residents and faculty.

Dr. Quill will serve as a medical school mentor for two of the six schools in this project. He will coordinate training materials for the required palliative care experience aspect of this project; he will participate in program oversight and evaluation.
